San Francisco 49ers…A Winning Dynasty
The San Francisco 49ers were the first professional sports franchise in San Francisco. Originally turned down by the NFL, they became a charter member of the All-American Football Conference in 1946. When the AAFC folded in 1950, the team was one of three granted a spot in the NFL, finally realizing the dreams of the owners.
One of the most loved teams in the NFL, the San Francisco 49ers were the first team to win five Super Bowls. The 1980’s were a good time for the team, giving them four of their Super Bowl wins and seven division championships. They made it to the playoffs eight times in the 80’s as well.
The 1990’s were also a great time for the San Francisco 49ers, but in recent years, the team has seemed to struggle, missing out on the division championship as well as the Super Bowl. They are making a comeback this year, currently ranked second in their division with five wins so far this year.
Candlestick Park has been the home of the San Francisco 49ers since 1971 and is the oldest stadium in the league that hasn’t undergone extensive renovations. In 1997, problems plagued the structure, prompting the franchise owners to lobby for the construction of a new stadium. Unfortunately, they were not able to get the project off the ground.
In 2006, the team came up with a plan to build a new stadium in the parking lot of the old stadium, along with an Olympic Village that could be converted into low income housing, in an attempt to gain a bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Disputes over potential traffic issues made this idea unsuitable and no other suitable locations were suggested.
The team’s owners, still shopping for a better site, started looking towards Santa Clara, 40 miles south of San Francisco. Outrage by both the mayor of the city and the fans in the community prompted a bill that would keep the team from building a stadium within 100 miles of San Francisco. Despite the tension, attempts are still being made to find a location within San Francisco, although there are serious negotiations continuing with the city of Santa Clara as well. Regardless of where the stadium is built, the franchise owners have announced that they do not intend to change the legacy or name of the team.
In the community, the San Francisco 49ers are very active, donating time and money to worthy causes and charities in the Bay Area. The 49ers Foundation is a non-profit effort that supports and encourages youth in the area by promoting safety, excellence, leadership, and respect. Violence prevention programs are a large part of the efforts by this foundation to make a brighter future for the underprivileged in the area.
The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most loved and supported teams in the NFL. They provide tons of entertainment at each game, and even in their less successful seasons, they are a team any football fan could be proud to support. A 49ers game is an experience not to be missed.
